The Micro-Tech 120 is one of the most popular digital scales on the market, most likely for its cool design. You'll notice the Micro-Tech 120 is different from other scales before sliding it out of the cardboard sleeve. It comes in a cardboard sleeve for starters. The scale also comes fully enclosed in a hard plastic clamshell-style case that measures 3.75" long x 3.5" wide x .625" high. This is one of the smallest and thinnest digital scales on the market and I just can't get over the intelligent design. If you require a scale that will actually fit in your pocket comfortably, I would give this one top consideration. This really is a TRUE pocket scale.
The square protective case has a fitted interior that secures the 3.125" diameter circular scale. The corners of the case are reinforced with plastic ribs that add significant strength to the structure. I promise that I don't normally get too excited about a case, but this perfectly engineered design really adds another layer of protection.
Expose the two buttons and 1.0" x 0.5" LCD display by giving the top section of the scale a quarter turn clockwise. Gram Precision calls it "Techtronic Sensor Lock Technology" and it really does seem to protect the delicate circuitry of your scale when stored in the off position. The weighing platform simply doesn't put any physical pressure on the sensors until you've got it turned to the on position! This scores major points for the wear and tear it will save.
The power button to the left of the display will engage the digital auto calibration feature which lasts a few seconds and should set the scale to zero. Users can program the readout to display weight units in either grams (g) or ounces (oz) by pressing the button on the right for a couple of seconds. The scale will measure up to 120g with 0.1g accuracy. Manual recalibration can be performed by placing the weighing tray (or any other container) on the platform, and briefly pressing the button to the right. The auto-shutoff is a battery saving feature that will turn the scale off after approximately 30 seconds of inactivity. The clear plastic weighing tray is contoured to fit the unusual platform shape and fits neatly within the protective case. The MT-120 is available in six colors including crystal blue, emerald green, lagoon blue, metallic gold, metallic silver and storm black.
Two required LR-44 battery cells are included by the manufacturer. Some people get skittish about the 'weird' batteries and whether it will be difficult or expensive to find replacements. DON'T WORRY. These are extremely common batteries that are frequently used in watches and other small gadgets. Try your local Walgreen's pharmacy. The scale couldn't be so small with AAA's!
Gram Precision backs all of their scales with a five year manufacturer warranty. In the industry overall, we're seeing manufacturer warrantees that range from three months to ten years. We feel that a five year warranty right out of the box on delicate electronic equipment is a pretty good length of time. If they sold these scales at Best Buy, they'd try to sell you that five year extended warranty for an extra thirty bucks.
The Micro-Tech 120 by Gram Precision is absolutely one of the best pocket scales ever made in terms of actual 'pocketability'. It may be small in size, but you'll find the design is far from fragile. The fitted protective case and twist locking design are all additional factors in its durability. It's really a great value for anyone seeking an accurate, reliable and portable digital scale in the $50 price range.
